Week four. March 2014.

LOOK:

QUESTION:
  • Where is the line between too little detail and just enough?
  • Can an implied narrative substitute for visual information to make a painting interesting?

PAINT:

Red, 10" x 8", oil on gessoed paper, $200.
Visit my web-gallery www.elizabethsauder.com to purchase this and other paintings and photographs.

FIELD NOTES:
I've painted a lot this winter, almost every day, and when looking over these paintings as a group I realize that I've been wrestling hard with the questions of what is too much or too little in detail, narrative, brush work, intense color, and accuracy to make a painting that is both interesting for me to paint and for the viewer to look at. I don't have any answers yet...
